Lancashire & Cheshire Branch Training Course in Salford

Lancashire and Cheshire Branch work collaboratively with Salford University within their CPD programme to provide hypnosis training for health professionals. This takes place over three weekends and is delivered by members of BSCAH.

About the trainers:

Mrs Phyllis Alden is a consultant clinical psychologist who has been especially involved for many years in the assessment and treatment of psychological difficulties arising from the diagnosis of cancer and the course of the disease from diagnosis to end stage as well as having a particular interest in the assessment and treatment of conditions such as PTSD, acute and chronic pain, difficulties arising from illness and injury, and the long term effects of trauma such as RTAs, assaults, torture etc.. She is an Accredited member of BSCAH and has extensive experience in the use of hypnosis in the treatment of a wide range of clinical problems and has been involved in hypnosis training, both nationally and internationally. She has also trained in EMDR, (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). She has experience of medico legal work and has participated in the drawing up of professional codes of conduct for two professionally recognised hypnosis organisations, the British Society of Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis (now BSCAH) and the European Society of Hypnosis. Currently she is a member of BSCAH Council and Treasurer of the European Society of Hypnosis and SIGOPAC, (Special Interest Group for Psychologists working in Oncology and Palliative Care) and became a Fellow of BSCAH in 2009.

Dr Geoff Ibbotson was a General Practitioner for twenty two years and worked part time as a psychological therapist in an outpatient psychology department for fourteen years. He works with refugees and asylum seekers in order to facilitate resolution of the consequences of past trauma and also to help them to improve their feelings and functioning. He also does part time medico-legal work and sees individuals for private therapy. He is an Accredited member of BSCAH, a certified NLP Master Practitioner and has trained in brief solution focused therapy as well as numerous other approaches. He is at present undergoing training in psychotherapy. He co-authored a book on smoking cessation and has contributed sections in one book on the use of imagery and , in another, sections on PTSD and working trans-culturally. He has run workshops on stress management in both the UK and Canada. He has been involved for many years with teaching Health Professionals how to use hypnotic techniques both for themselves and within their own field of clinical expertise. Over many years he has lectured extensively on audit and also on PTSD. His particular interests include PTSD and working trans-culturally. He is on the Council of BSCAH, Honorary Secretary of BSCAH Academic & Accreditation Committee and became a Fellow of BSCAH in 2009.

Dr Cath Potter qualified at Manchester Dental School in 1980 and has worked in the Community Dental Service, General Dental Practice and part time at Birmingham Dental Hospital. She recently worked for Salford PCT as Senior Dental Officer and outreach teacher and the University of Manchester as Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow for the Control of Pain and Anxiety postgraduate Diploma and MSc. Cath was one of the first people to be appointed as an outreach teacher in restorative dentistry and has supervised 4th year students at Ordsall Clinic in Salford since the beginning of the innovative Manchester outreach programme.

Her present position is Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow in Behavioural Sciences at Leeds Dental Institute where she is year 1 lead and module organiser for a number of modules throughout the BChD curriculum.

She also has a special interest in the treatment of anxious patients using hypnosis and Inhalation Sedation which forms the topic for her prospective PhD.

She is an Accredited member of BSCAH and has been involved in training for many years. She is also co-author of Hypnosis and Communication in Dental Practice published in 2007.

Dr Ann Williamson has been a General Practitioner for thirty two years and an Accredited member of the British Society of Medical & Dental Hypnosis (now BSCAH), a certified NLP Master Practitioner and has had training in brief solution oriented therapy and other approaches. She has been involved for many years with teaching Health Professionals how to use hypnotic techniques both for themselves and within their own field of clinical expertise. She runs stress management, personal development and brief psychological interventions workshops on request, as well as seeing private clients for therapy. She has written three books: on stress management, smoking cessation and brief psychological interventions in clinical practice. She is on the BSCAH Council and currently holds the post of Media Rep and became a Fellow of BSCAH in 2009.
