About the training:
The Foundation course is aimed at teaching the basics that health professionals can integrate into their existing clinical work.
As a safe-guard for clients / patients, we will only train health care professionals who are eligible for membership of BSCAH. If in any doubt please send your CV to Linda Dunlop at LDunlop76@aol.com
If you have completed Level l training with the former BSMDH Mets & South group or another Branch of BSCAH we will accept your application to complete modules 2 & 3.
Each module will have a taught component, with demonstrations where appropriate, supervised practice, and the opportunity to ask questions pertinent to your professional interest. We aim to ensure that by the end of the course you will feel competent to use your new skills effectively. The course teachers are all health care professionals, who regularly use hypnosis in their clinical practice. We work closely with our academic colleagues so that we present evidence-based techniques, in a forum which encourages you to build your own individuality into the therapy you deliver. There will be plenary question and answer sessions at the end of each day, and we will ask you to evaluate each module. Hand outs of notes for each module, including reading lists and references will be available electronically prior to the course and any presentations used will be made available electronically to participants. Following the Foundation Training you should feel confident to add hypnosis, including teaching self-hypnosis, to your existing skills in anxiety management. We also introduce the concept and rationale for hypnotic techniques in other conditions on Module 2 and 3, so if you are already working with patients with these conditions you should then be able to integrate simple hypnotic and imagery techniques into your work. The course does not lead to qualifications as such but can be allowed towards CPD as we keep a register, evaluation forms and issue an attendance certificate. If you wish to have a university qualification then the Midlands Branch run an Advanced Diploma/BSc Conversion course with the City of Birmingham University. The three module course costs £500 (including a free copy of A Handbook of Contemporary Clinical Hypnosis published by Wiley and refreshments/lunch) and participants are eligible for a year's free membership of BSCAH so that they can attend meetings and workshops for further training and on-going support. Membership thereafter costs £75 a year including issues of the peer reviewed journal Contemporary Hypnosis &Integrated Therapies. With NICE accepting hypnosis as an effective treatment for IBS and with all the mass of evidence for its use in oncology and pain, demand for hypnosis is very likely to grow. With the latest adult dental health survey confirming the high levels of dental anxiety in the population, hypnosis can offer a drug-free alternative or an adjunct to standard sedation techniques for patients. Courses will be held either at the postgraduate centre in Warrington Hospital or a little further up the road at the Villagio Hotel. The first module will: Explore the theories and nature of hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena; teach how to induce and deepen hypnosis; teach how to give suggestion more effectively and how to use language to enhance outcome; teach self-hypnosis and anchoring; teach practical applications of hypnosis in treating anxiety and depression.
