- Ways to reduce anxiety and discomfort
- Ways to give the patient more control over their symptoms
Learning objectives:
By the end of this one day workshop participants should:
- Understand the integration of mind and body
- Be aware of the nocebo effect of words and how to minimise this negative effect by utilising different types of words and phrases
- Be able to take a therapeutic history, eliciting the patient’s strengths and abilities whilst minimising a negative focus
- Be able to establish rapid rapport with their patients
- Know several different ways to change the patient’s focus of attention and elicit the relaxation response
- Be able to utilise client generated imagery and metaphor as effective tools to reduce anxiety and discomfort and to give more control to the patient
- Be aware of how best to give positive suggestion to the patient
- Be able to teach the patient ways to set and achieve their goals
- Be able to teach patients simple tools to reduce their own anxiety and increase their control over their symptoms
- Understand processes by which functional symptoms may arise
