About the training:

This meeting will explore and debate the current state of the application and use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy in the NHS, debate the potential implications of the terms hypnotherapy and hypnosis, and examine the rationale for the use of the term hypnosis or hypnotherapy in professional work.

The Elliotson prize will be awarded and three presentations provided by the first three prize winners. The presentations will debate the implications and appropriateness of the terms hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Key topics include: 

  • The rationale for the use of the term 'hypnosis' in professional work.
  • How to promote the appropriate use of hypnosis in a variety of fields of physical and mental health.
  • The potential added value of hypnosis in the NHS.

Entrants are invited to submit a case study or an essay of no more than 1000 - 1500 words in response to the following question: “Discuss the rationale for the use of the term hypnosis or hypnotherapy.”


  • First prize: £200 and an RSM certificate 
  • Second prize: £100 and an RSM certificate 
  • Third prize: £50 and an RSM certificate

Submission deadline 

Sunday 14 March 2021

Open to:

Trainees in hypnosis (those who are undertaking a training course, and those who are within one year of completing their course):

  • Clinical trainees in medicine, dentistry nursing or psychological fields
  • Students enrolled in related graduate academic courses
  • Those qualified in medicine, dentistry nursing or those in psychological fields
