We follow the BSCAH Core curriculum (36 hours CPD) The course will be co-presented by Grahame Smith and Gillian Smith (no relation),
We usually have guest tutors for Module 3 according to professional mix and number of delegates

We intend the whole course to be an enjoyable opportunity to learn with and from other disciplines in a supportive non-threatening setting.  Maximum  of 15  ensure this.
We are flexible according to needs.

2019 SATURDAY times are sign in from 09.15 for 09.45 start  finishing at 5pm , SUNDAY sign in ready for 09.30 prompt start. Closing time on Sundays is usually negotiated with the group to allow for train times etc. (Tutors remain available to 5pm)   Please click the icon for the 2019 programme.    

The FIRST module is designed to enable you to have:-

  • Basic practical understanding of the nature of hypnosis
  • A personal experience of hypnosis
  • Developed knowledge, skills, and experience with colleagues in the group in the art and craft of using hypnosis
  • Be aware of the possibilities offered with clinical hypnosis and scientific and clinical evidence for its application
  • Be aware of cautions, contraindications and ethical issues
  • Be ready and able to use straightforward imagery, relaxation, and general suggestions to help patients /clients/service users encountered in professional practice (with or without formal induction as appropriate).

We hope it will refresh your rapport with patients, enable you to offer enhanced non pharmacological interventions and increase you own sense of wellbeing. Gill, Grahame and Dan offer you support during, and indeed after, the course. 

About the Tutors - Grahame Smith, Gillian Smith, Leslie Walker and Dan Round

Grahame Smith uses hypnosis and related techniques to help patients with a range of problems as seen by GPs. He has taught colleagues on many courses over the years, most recently for BSCAH on this course at The Retreat York and Queens Oncology Centre, Hull, also for RSM and Bournemoth University. He was a GP trainer and educational supervisor for new trainers, and was a prolific GP appraiser. His training includes the University of Sheffield Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis. He is Past President of BSCAH and an Assessor for BSCAH Accreditation. He is a Council member of the Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Section of RSM. When in practice, Grahame had an interest in quality issues and organisational audit. His earlier career includes anaesthesia, part time occupational health, and work in Southern Africa.

Gillian Smith is a retired consultant psychiatrist who has worked in the NHS and the independent sector. She has been using hypnosis within her clinical practice since 1982, She has recently refreshed her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for clinical hypnosis and co-presented this course in recent years. She has a personal interest in the application of mindfulness and in compassion focused therapy. She is currently based in Edinburgh where she is in  independent hypnosis practice.

Leslie Walker is Emeritus Professor of Cancer Rehabilitation at the University of Hull (guest tutor for Module 3 subject to number of delegates and professional mix). He founded a unique Oncology Health Service which has won a number of awards, and the approach is known internationally as the "Hull model". Current research interests include the psychoneuroimmunology of cancer; psychosocial aspects of cancer screening, prevention of clinically significant distress, and Li Fraumeni syndrome. Professor Walker has given numerous Invited Lectures and Keynote Addresses throughout the world, and he has over 300 publications to his name.

Dan Round (probably taking part in Module 2) is a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist specialising in eating disorders, anxiety and mood disorders working at the Tuke Centre at the Retreat. Dan has a mental health nurse background and is interested in using hypnosis with CBT.
